Stair treads and risers
Can hardwood stairs be matched to a new hardwood floor?
Yes. Treads, risers and nosing are fabricated from the same lot of material as the floor and finished at the same time with the same system, so grain, colour and sheen match. Matching stairs after the floor is already finished is possible but the colour match is never as close.
- Fabrication
- Site-measured, cut from the same lot as the floor
- Finish
- Applied with the floor, same batch
- Retrofit
- Overlay treads over existing stringers
- Nosing
- Bullnose, square or mitred returns
Stairs are the most-looked-at surface in a house and the least forgiving to build. Every tread is measured individually because no stairwell is square.
We sequence stairs with the floor, not after it. Finishing them together from the same batch is the only way to guarantee the sheen matches under raking light.
Retrofitting over an existing carpeted stringer is common in Monmouth County renovations. The existing rough treads usually stay and receive a solid overlay tread rather than being torn out.
