Water damage and board replacement
Can water-damaged hardwood floor be repaired without replacing the whole floor?
Usually yes. Damaged boards are cut out and new boards are woven into the existing field with staggered joints so the repair has no visible seam, then the affected area is sanded and refinished to blend. A whole-floor replacement is only necessary when the subfloor itself has failed or the flooring is no longer obtainable.
- Repair method
- Cut-out and weave-in, staggered joints
- Blend
- Sand and refinish affected area
- Critical window
- Dry within 48 hours
- Insurance
- Photo and moisture documentation provided
Speed matters more than technique. Wood that is dried within the first 48 hours often flattens back out on its own; wood left wet for a week rarely does.
We source matching material before cutting anything out. A weave-in repair with a species or grade that does not match is more visible than the damage was.
Cupping frequently reverses. Sanding a cupped floor flat while it is still wet removes wood that the board will need when it dries, and produces a crowned floor instead. We wait for moisture content to stabilise before touching it.
For insurance work we document moisture readings and photograph before, during and after. Adjusters ask for it and it speeds up the claim.
